HostV VPS Review

Here is what Ernest Kwan had to say about HostV and the overall experience with their Virtual Private Servers hosting service.
Prior to moving to HostV, I was with MediaTemple's DV 3.5 service (Unmanaged VPS). First, I want to say that I had been with MT for almost 3 years, and my initial service with was good, however in the past year, I am not sure what went wrong, but my VPS started to run out of memory (I had 1gb dedicated memory). Funny thing is, none of my sites are traffic nor resource intensive. I kept getting kernel memory errors, and had to constantly reboot the server, sometimes in excess of a dozen times a day. Furthermore, the response times were horrible. When I did load tests on LoadImpact, the MT site came back with response times in execess of 5-8 seconds, and sometimes, would even timeout. Their support did try to resolve my issue, but nothing worked at the end, I turned all my services off, all my websites off, and I was still get kmemsize errors! What was worse was that I found out they hard capped the kmemlimit to 12megs! So even though my system was reporting nearly 600mb of free memory, my kmemsize limit was hit very frequently for God knows what reason. In any case, I asked MT kindly if they could increase my kmemsize limit to something more generous, like 24mb, they said nope, gotta upgrade my account. Pfft, no thanks. That was the end of that discussion. Then I ran into HostV, I noticed that their shared hosting is average but their VPS service appeared to be of great value and after doing some loadimpacts on some sites hosted by HostV, I was like, wow, maybe I should give them a try (30 day trial). This is just a first impressions review, but so far, HostV has treated me very well. Their support is very responsive and friendly. Better yet, I get unmetered bandwidth. The only downside is that although Cpanel and WHM are powerful GUIs for managing sites and server, I found it a bit confusing when some things didn't work quite right away (i.e. there were some licensing issues initially). Once that was resolved, things have been working rather well. I do prefer the Plesk interface, but I can live with CPanel. Performance was a big factor for me. My sites are low bandwidth sites with moderate stress on the MySQL database. I needed a VPS solution that could offer me snappy performance for low volume traffic. Luckily, HostV satisfied that. When I ran LoadImpact on my site after the switch, I was getting 2-3 second response times on my site from 1-50 concurrent requests and it was scaling pretty well with the extra traffic volume. Price was also a big factor. At MT, I was getting quad core xeon/20gb space/512mb dedicated/1024mb burst/1tb/Unmanaged/Plesk/No Backup/1 Dedicated IP for roughly $35 bucks a month (the plan now sells for $50/month - but since I've been with MT for 3 years, I was on a grandfathered plan). At HostV, I am now getting 50gb space on a 8-core xeon/RAID 10 array/50GB Backup/Managed/512mb dedicated/1024mb burst/unmetered bandwidth/Cpanel/2 Dedicated IPs for $29/month (p.s. There's a coupon for an additional 50% off - just google it). Plus they have a 30 day money back guarantee. I was going to bail if the performance sucked like MT, but it didn't! Now I'm getting same performance as one of my other friend's VPS that is hosted by Rackspace that costs 4x more! In any case, you get what I'm talking about :) Again, this is for the Managed VPS (VZ1) plan. I hope that HostV can keep up their performance like my first week with 'em. I'll come back and post again in 6 months to see how the service is coming along :)

Here's what Ernest Kwan had to say about HostV's Customer Support:
Customer Support is very quick to answer. Since setting up my account, I've ran into some issues with some of my domains not resolving properly as well as my mail server not quite working right. I am their managed VPS plan so I get full support from them, and I'm already reaping the benefits of this support as their friendly support crew are giving me status updates of their progress and have resolved most of my initial setup issues. They have a priority ticket system, so as long as you're honest about the importance of your ticket, it will be dealt with on a timely manner and professionally.
