Lunarpages VPS Review

Here is what Patrick Carleton had to say about Lunarpages and the overall experience with their Virtual Private Servers hosting service.
I didn't have much of an opinion of the hosting company - various Google searches suggested they are a good host and at a reasonable price. From what I could see, LunarPages Xen VPS were one of the cheaper companies selling VPS in the UK. Their website could do with a makeover but that's not what I judge a company on. I should mention that I usually go for web hosting rather than VPS as it's more technical than I like to get but on this occasion I thought I'd go for the jump and that's when things started to go wrong for me.

Hmm... I'm not sure so have given them an 8. I signed up, got an invoice within 5 minutes and less than 10 minutes after paying, I got my VPS welcome email. This being my first VPS, I can't compare but certainly from an 'Internet Shopping' experience it was fairly standard.

Reliability, I've only been with them for a week so I can't really say but from some of the other customers I spoke to on the chat channel, there hasn't been an outage other than this occasion.

Hard to fault them here. Prices are very reasonable for what they offer and they don't do any of overselling that almost every other company does. If a server is at capacity, they won't continue to stuff it with VPS and I guess that's why performance is so good on the one I'm on.

Sorry it's such a long review but as a warning to others - it's no use having a very communicative VPS host if YOU'RE not communicating with them. The lesson I learnt was that sometimes your VPS host is doing everything they can for you but you don't realize or appreciate it. I guess this review is my way of apologizing to the great folks at LunarPages Xen VPS for the dedication, patience and quality of service they offer. I can't thank them enough for their professionalism and all the help they've since given and continue to give me (despite my embarrassing phone rant). If it comes down to price - you'll find it hard to beat their offerings. If it comes down to service - I've found nowhere else that provides, phone, IRC, email and forum support with such friendly and helpful staff. If it comes down to you being a jerk - they're still more professional than a lot of major brands out there. Thank-you LunarPages Xen VPS for making my first VPS purchase a pleasure.

If you'd asked me to write this 24 hours ago - I'd have probably given LunarPages Xen VPS a very low score but having taken some time out I've changed my mind.

24 hours ago - I couldn't get access to my VPS and this was only a few days into having my account - after I'd uploaded everything and spent hours configuring some stuff. It was all basic (but not to someone who's new to VPS) and then all of a sudden - my SSH connection dies.

I knew I hadn't done anything so I tried to go to the clients website that they have. All seemed well.

I decide to wait a while before emailing them but returning to my VPS 20 minutes later - still nothing.

It turns out the datacentre they're in are having a major network issue.

All in all, my VPS was probably offline for 4 hours!

I emailed twice and it __seemed__ (they had infact got back to me but more on that later) like I wasn't getting any response from these guys so I decided to call. By this stage though, I was more than a little angry and made no attempt to hide the fact.

I got Dave (or was it Adam?) on the phone and pretty much gave him a piece of my mind. He went and checked his systems and confirmed to me that he'd received my emails and that he'd replied. It was only then that I realized something.

I'd recently changed my mail client settings to point to a new mail server I was testing and hadn't changed them back.

When I did, I could see that I'd been contacted with no less than 4 updates of what was going on. Enough to say that I was totally embarrassed. I'm not usually like this but when you feel like you're being ignored I do get annoyed.

Anyway, the guy on the phone was exceptionally patient with me. He took the time to read the responses to me and he STILL apologized for the outage and promised to keep me updated on the matter.

So my rating of the support is exceptional. There are few places that will let you rant at them and still treat you with more civility than you're due.

They have a chat channel you can join for chat or for some light support. They say they don't offer support on their IRC chat but they often do. I guess they help when they can.

On communication and support, I can't praise them enough.

(Just to be clear this was a datacentre outage that affect over 4000 servers and tens of thousands of customers so clearly it wasn't isolated to these guys)
